Elliot did not paint a much better picture for the future, saying AI apps are “never going to be cost-efficient, are never going to actually work right, will take up too much energy, or will prove to be untrustworthy.”

Golman Sach issued a report in early July, with some of its analysts reaching similar conclusions.

GS Head of Global Equity Research Jim Covello minced no words in his evaluation of AI:

Many people attempt to compare AI today to the early days of the internet. But even in its infancy, the internet was a low-cost technology solution that enabled e-commerce to replace costly incumbent solutions. Amazon could sell books at a lower cost than Barnes & Noble because it didn’t have to maintain costly brick-and-mortar locations. Fast forward three decades, and Web 2.0 is still providing cheaper solutions that are disrupting more expensive solutions, such as Uber displacing limousine services. The news is a big win for Google, especially given the challenges and internal turmoil the company experienced developing Gemini, then known as Bard. Early feedback on Bard from Google employees called the chatbot “cringe-worthy,” and said its responses could lead to “serious injury or death.”

Google CEO Sundar Pichai was criticized for leading the company’s flawed Bard/Gemini rollout, with the issues a contributing factor in some critics calling for his removal as CEO.

The NHTSA says Tesla is voluntarily recalling vehicles “out of an abundance of caution.”

Beginning on June 18, 2024, at no cost to customers, affected vehicles received an over-the-air software remedy with firmware release 2024.20.3. Firmware release 2024.20.3 or a later firmware release detects the open hood and provides a customer-facing user interface notification of the hood open state.

The remedy component incorporates the software remedy described above whereas the recalled component does not incorporate the software remedy described above.

AWS announced Graviton4 in mid-July, saying the chip was four times faster than the first-gen version, while using 60% less energy for the same performance as similar Amazon EC2 instances. In other marketing, the company promised a 30% improvement over the previous generation Graviton3.

Phoronix has put the new chip through its paces, benchmarking it against AMD’s EPYC, Intel’s Xeon, and Ampere Altra. The results were telling, with only the AMD EPYC outperforming the Graviton4. Meanwhile, the AWS chip handily outperformed Intel’s Xeon and practically stomped on the Ampere Altra.

Overall from the mix of workloads tested on the Graviton4 96-core metal instance (r8g.metal-24xl) I was rather surprised and impressed by the performance of this Armv9.0 server processor. The performance was often competitive to Intel Sierra Forest / Emerald Rapids and AMD Genoa(X) / Bergamo. Though, unfortunately, was unable to provide any remote power results for Graviton4 due to no power sensors being exposed for the r8g.metal-24xl instance when testing.

For the mix of 32 benchmarks run, the Graviton4 processor overall was the most advanced AArch64 server performance we’ve seen to date. Hopefully we’ll be getting our hands finally on AmpereOne soon for seeing how that AArch64 competition is fairing and all the more interesting due to hands on access with power monitoring with those chips set to be available in the retail channel compared to Graviton4 just running in the confines of AWS.

The results are good news for AWS, and ARM computing in general, and could spell the beginning of a major shift in the server market. ARM already has significant advantages in power consumption and heat generation over traditional x86 chips. With the performance gap closing, companies may look more seriously at ARM-based chips.

So, you should keep your current job. If you resign now, you may not get hired or start working immediately, leading to a longer gap between your last and next payment. 

Currently, it may be wise to look for other income sources. You can trade stocks or open a new business. You can also work freelance or part-time. These are more accessible today amid the digital revolution. You can work and earn wherever possible with your mobile phone.

Make extra loan payments 

Religiously paying your loans boosts your credit score. Yet, it can be tedious and more expensive if you only do the bare minimum. So, you must consider making extra payments to shorten your repayment duration. This strategy can make a significant change in the long run. 

Suppose you have an existing loan of $50,000 with 5% interest or $2,500 annually, and you should pay $500 monthly. After transferring the minimum required amount, $208 goes to interest, and only $292 is subtracted from the loan amount. As such, only 0.5% is deducted from the principal. 

After a year, you still have a balance of $46,496, which will increase to $48,820 after adding the 5% interest. 

If you make extra payments of $200 per month, your loan balance will only be $44,096, which will be $46,300 after adding the interest. This will give a difference of 2,520 ($48,820 – $46,300), which is higher than the annual payment of $2,400 ($200×12). Hence, it makes your repayment cheaper. 

Apply for a high-yield savings account 

As advised earlier, suppose you use the 50-30-20 rule for your $4,500 monthly income. Your monthly savings of $900 will become $10,800 after a year. If you put it in a regular savings account, it will bear an interest of about 0.5% or $54. 

But if you leave it in a high-yield savings account, it can bear about 5% APY or $540. A huge difference, right? After a year, your savings amount will become $11,340. After five years, it will become $13,784 versus $11,071 in a regular account. 

You can use your earnings to make extra loan payments or start a business to increase your income streams. 

Choose reliable loan refinancing providers 

There are plenty of refinancers out there. Each one of them guarantees a favorable payment method and schedule. However, you must know that there’s something more than meets the eye often. Beware of predatory and subprime providers. 

Check as many lenders as you can personally and on the internet. Observe all critical aspects, including their payment schedules, miscellaneous fees, and interest rates. 

Also, investigate their reputation as a loan refinancing provider. For example, you might consider SoFi’s mortgage refinance offers. They’ve been in business for over a decade and ensure borrowers’ safety and financial security. They boast a clean record to prove their reliability and can save borrowers from unwanted stress, especially when the payment week approaches.  

Also, it has a favorable payment rate. Its ten-year mortgage rate is fixed at 6.0% versus the national average of 6.6%, and a 30-year mortgage offers a rate of 6.9% versus the national average of 7.1%. 

Automate loan repayments 

Automating loan repayments through autopay can help lower interest rates. That way, a considerable portion of your monthly payment is deducted from the principal amount. This will also raise your chances of getting approved by loan refinancers to get lower fees and interest. 

Federal student loan providers give a 0.25% discount on autopay. Likewise, private creditors lower the amount deducted from your wallet, helping you save $150 annually. 

An example is SoFi, which has an APR of 3.99% for student loans versus the 4.9% national average. 

What is driving the loan refinance boom?

While loan refinancing has existed for a long time, its root cause can be traced to the 2020 pandemic. When businesses had to shut down and lay off employees, the US economy fell into a deep recession. To alleviate the situation, the Fed lowered interest rates to near-zero levels. 

This attracted borrowers and investors, particularly in the real estate market. With an influx of homebuyers, housing inventory could not meet the demand. So, in 4Q21, the median home sales price exceeded $400,000 for the first time. This slowed demand, but prices remain high today since the US is still short of at least 4M houses. 

Additionally, the mortgage rate of 6.93% is more than twice as much as in 2021. Given this, monthly mortgage repayment has become more expensive, prompting many to apply for mortgage loan refinancing.  As of April 2024, mortgage loan refinancing applications were 4% higher than in the same period in 2023. 

Student loans come second, with 43.2M Americans having federal loans to pay. Currently, the average student federal and private loan is $39,981. Meanwhile, the average amount a student must borrow to get a college degree is $32,637. 

Another driver is the 2022 inflation. After the inflation rate set a new all-time high of 9.1%, many businesses struggled to manage their costs and expenses amid softer consumer demand. Meanwhile, many private individuals touched their savings to cope with the higher prices of consumer goods. At the end of FY23, 40% of Americans depleted their pandemic-era savings. 

In addition, the Fed implemented interest rate hikes to temper inflation. It skyrocketed from 0.5% in 1Q22 to 5.5% after a year. This figure hurt many borrowers, particularly those who became heavily reliant on personal loans and credit cards due to inflation. Credit card loans ballooned to $1.1T in 1Q24. 

Currently, the inflation is more stable at 3.3%, while the Fed maintains rate hike pauses. However, it may take some time before the Fed implements its target rate cuts. With interest rates above 5%, loan refinancing is now a staple for many households and businesses.

Deepfake porn has been a growing problem, especially with the rise of AI. The technology has made deepfakes so convincing that it can be almost impossible to tell if a deepfake is real or not. As a result, victims often deal with emotional damage and humiliation, not to mention damage to the victim’s reputation if the deepfake is widely circulated without people realizing it’s fake.

According to Engadget, the US Senate aims to tackle the problem with the Disrupt Explicit Forged Images and Non-Consensual Edits Act (DEFIANCE Act). The bill would give victims 10 years to sue for damages.

The DEFIANCE Act would give victims the ability to sue not only those who create nonconsensual deepfake porn, but also those who distribute and possess such material. Initial damages could be up to $150,000, with that figure going up to $250,000 if the incident also includes stalking, harassment, or attempted sexual assault.

Majority Leader Chuck Schumer praised the passage of the bill in his remarks in his floor remarks:

As we know, AI plays a bigger role in our lives than ever before, and while it has many benefits, it’s also easier than ever to create sexually explicit deep fakes without a person’s consent. It is a horrible attack on someone’s privacy and dignity to have these fake images of them circulating online without recourse.

And this isn’t just some fringe issue that happens to only a few people—it’s a widespread problem. These types of malicious and hurtful pictures can destroy lives. Nobody is immune, not even celebrities like Taylor Swift or Megan Thee Stallion. It’s a grotesque practice and victims of these deep fakes deserve justice. And this is one of the examples of the AI guardrails I often talk about. AI is a remarkable technology that can spur incredible innovation, but we must pass guardrails to prevent its worst abuses from causing people grave harm.

By passing this bill, we are telling victims of explicit nonconsensual deepfakes that we hear them and we are taking action.

The House will likely vote on a sister bill. If it passes the house, it will go to President Biden to be signed into law.

T-Mobile announced in May that it was raising prices on some legacy plans, including those previously covered by the company’s price guarantee. In some cases, the price hike was as much as $5 per line per month, as well as $2 per line per month for connected devices.

The magenta carrier is now facing a lawsuit claiming that it reneged on its promises:

Based upon T-Mobile’s representations that the rates offered with respect to certain plans were guaranteed to last for life or as long as the customer wanted to remain with that plan, each Plaintiff and the Class Members agreed to these plans for wireless cellphone service from T-Mobile. However, in May 2024, T-Mobile, Unilaterally did away with these legacy phone plans and switched Plaintiffs and the Class to more expensive plans without their consent.

The lawsuit then goes on to quote then-CEO John Legere’s promise to customers when the Un-contract price guarantee was introduced in 2017 (before being replaced by Price Lock in 2022):

Today, T-Mobile introduced the Un-contract for T-Mobile ONE — and notched another industry first with the first-ever price guarantee on an unlimited 4G LTE plan. With the Un-contract, T-Mobile signs, and the customers hold all the power. Now, T-Mobile ONE customers keep their price until THEY decide to change it. T-Mobile will never change the price you pay for your T-Mobile ONE plan. When you sign up for T-Mobile ONE, only you have the power to change the price you pay.

Given T-Mobile’s marketing surrounding its pricing guarantee, the BBB’s National Advertising Division (NAD) recommended that T-Mobile stop using “Price Lock” to describe its plans.

In each of the challenged advertisements, the description of the “Price Lock” policy appears in text below the claim and states, with some variation, “Get your last month of service on us if we ever raise your internet rate.” NAD found that a disclosure that “Price Lock” does not lock the price but gives consumers one month of free service if certain conditions are met contradicts the main message of the “Price Lock” claim.

Following our initial coverage of the NAD’s decision, a T-Mobile spokesperson reached out to WPN to share a statement disputing the NAD’s conclusion:

We believe the challenged ads clearly communicated our generous Price Lock benefit, which offers customers on eligible rate plans the opportunity to get their final month’s service charges paid by us if their price changes and they let us know they’ve chosen to leave. We will continue to offer Price Lock to customers but will take the NAD’s recommendations for clarifying the offer into consideration.

While that may be T-Mobile’s current explanation of what the Price Lock guarantees (and the plan has changed over the years) , that is most certainly not what Legere vocalized in 2017, nor is it line with some of the company’s other statements.

“Wireless consumers pay Billions extra every year in added surcharges, taxes, monthly fees and carrier price hikes. It’s reached epidemic proportions! And, the carriers just keep inventing new ways to make their customers pay. So, the Un-carrier’s putting an end to it,” said John Legere, then T-Mobile president and CEO in a company press release.

T-Mobile’s marketing and stance was very clear: Other companies hike prices, but we won’t. What customers didn’t realize is that promise only applied until it didn’t.

Intel’s latest CPUs have been plagued with problems, with users reporting crashes and instability. The company announced that it had found the problem, saying a faulty microcode algorithm was causing “elevated operating voltage” in the impacted processors.

Citing unnamed source, Tom’s Hardware says the damage experience by crashing CPUs is irreversible:

The bug causes irreversible degradation of the impacted processors. We’re told that the microcode patch will not repair processors already experiencing crashes, but it is expected to prevent issues on processors that aren’t currently impacted by the issue. For now, it is unclear if CPUs exposed to excessive voltage have suffered from invisible degradation or damage that hasn’t resulted in crashes yet but could lead to errors or crashes in the future.

Interestingly, Intel’s official response does nothing to refute Tom’s claims, only saying the number of impacted processors is limited:

Short answer: We can confirm there was a via Oxidation manufacturing issue (addressed back in 2023) but it is not related to the instability issue.

Long answer: We can confirm that the via Oxidation manufacturing issue affected some early Intel Core 13th Gen desktop processors. However, the issue was root caused and addressed with manufacturing improvements and screens in 2023. We have also looked at it from the instability reports on Intel Core 13th Gen desktop processors and the analysis to-date has determined that only a small number of instability reports can be connected to the manufacturing issue.

For the Instability issue, we are delivering a microcode patch which addresses exposure to elevated voltages which is a key element of the Instability issue. We are currently validating the microcode patch to ensure the instability issues for 13th/14th Gen are addressed.

Tom’s says Intel has not issued a recall, and evidently doesn’t plan to. There is some hope, based on the company’s initial revelation about the microcode discovery that Intel may address things on a case-by-case basis.

Intel is committed to making this right with our customers, and we continue asking any customers currently experiencing instability issues on their Intel Core 13th/14th Gen desktop processors reach out to Intel Customer Support for further assistance.

After repeated delays, Boeing’s Starliner finally launched and successfully made its way to the ISS. Unfortunately, issues with helium leaks and faulty thrusters led NASA to delay Starliner’s return in late June, saying the craft would not return until sometime in July.

With July nearly over, NASA and Boeing held a news conference Thursday to acknowledge the troubled craft would remain in space longer than anticipated. While the agency says Starliner’s return will be delayed until at least sometime in August, the agency would not commit to a hard date.

“We’re making great progress, but we’re just not quite ready to do that,” said NASA’s Commercial Crew manager Steve Stich, according to CNBC.

Stich revealed that NASA does have contingency plans in place to bring back the two astronauts that were taken to the ISS by Starliner, in the event it becomes necessary. Likely to Boeing executives chagrin, one such a contingency plan involves sending SpaceX’s Dragon to retrieve the two astronauts.

Boeing suffered one embarrassing mishap after another, both with its aviation and its space divisions. The longer the Starliner situation continues, the more apparent it becomes that SpaceX has won the commercial space race.

Wiens took to X to ask Anthropic to stop crawling the iFixit website:

Hey @AnthropicAI: I get you’re hungry for data. Claude is really smart! But do you really need to hit our servers a million times in 24 hours?

You’re not only taking our content without paying, you’re tying up our devops resources. Not cool.

Wiens goes on to say that iFixit’s TOS expressly forbid AI crawlers from scraping its content, and the TOS was in effect before Anthropic began scraping the site. iFixit has since added Anthropic to its robots.txt file, but it remains to be seen if Anthropic will respect it.

Wiens post raises a number of concerning issues:

  • It is inexcusable that an AI company trying to set itself apart as the responsible company in an industry beset with ethics issues is blatantly ignoring other companies’ TOS in order to grab content.
  • It is even more inexcusable that Anthropic’s crawler is hitting any one company’s “servers a million times in 24 hours.” Such behavior has more in common with malicious DDoS attacks than it does legitimate activity.

Unfortunately, iFixit’s experience is far from unique. Read the Docs cofounder Eric Holscher responded to Wiens to say his organization had experienced the same thing:

Yea, they were hammering us over at @readthedocs as well. We were planning to write a blog post on it, since this behavior is definitely gonna get all AI crawlers blocked because of abuse, not even because of the copyright issues.

Several other individuals from well-known organizations—such as Wikipedia and PythonAnywhere—reported similar behavior from AI firms.

iFixit’s experience illustrates why so many people don’t trust AI companies. Such companies are playing fast and loose with the ethics of content ownership, not to mention creating a very real burden on the organizations whose content they are accessing. Rather than acting responsibly, AI companies are in a mad dash to vacuum up as much data as possible before legislation properly regulates the industry.

Hopefully Anthropic will do the right thing and adjust its policies in the wake of iFixit’s revelation.

According to Reuters, the Commerce Department is planning to unveil new rules in August. The rules will cover critical components and software from China, as well as other countries that are deemed adversaries.

“We’re looking at a few components and some software – not the whole car – but it would be some of the key driver components of the vehicle that manage the software and manage the data around that car that would have to be made in an allied country,” Alan Estevez, export controls chief, said in mid-July at a Colorado forum.

Estevez went on to describe the threat malicious vehicle software could pose.

“A car is a very scary thing. Your car knows a lot about you. Your car probably gets a software update, whether it’s an electric vehicle or an autonomous combustion engine vehicle,” he added.

“A modern car has a lot of software in it. It’s taking lots of pictures. It has a drive system. It’s connected to your phone. It knows who you call. It knows where you go. It knows a lot about you.”

There has been growing concern about China’s access to vehicle data that Beijing could use for espionage. For example, the House recently passed a bill that would ban the sale of drones from Chinese company DJI. Lawmakers voiced concern that drones flying in US airspace could be used to gather sensitive information about critical infrastructure.

As Estevez pointed out, vehicle software poses an even greater threat because of the access it has to the occupants’ personal data. Phone calls, text messages, driving destinations, and much more could potentially be collected and used.

If the US does move forward with a ban on Chinese automotive software, it’s a safe bet such a move will escalate the ongoing tension between the two countries.
